Martha's Vineyard

Getting Around

Martha's Vineyard is a great place to visit, with lots to see and do in and out of the towns. Depending on where you are staying, and the amount of time you plan to spend here, you may or may not wish to bring a car. Many visitors to the Island prefer to skip the hassle of boat reservations and on-Island parking, and choose to leave their cars on the other side. It's easy to get around the Island using public transportation, bikes, rental cars and feet. The following information will guide you through your choices.

Vineyard Transit Authority (VTA)
www.vineyardtransit.com
Martha's Vineyard offers a comprehensive bus system that connects all towns, Edgartown, Oak Bluffs, Vineyard Haven, Aquinnah, Chilmark, and West Tisbury. Frequency of service varies with the season, but buses run regularly year-round and are a great cost-effective way to see the beauty of the Island. You can pay as you go, or purchase 1-day, 3-day, or 1-week  bus passes on the buses, at the Steamship Authority or at the Edgartown Visitors Center, which also sells 1-month and annual passes. Buses may be boarded at stop or flagged en route in safe places(ie. not in an intersection or on a curve.).

VTA buses are all equipped with bike racks, so you can take your bike with you on your more distant excursions—bike and bus— it's a great way to go!

All VTA buses are handicap accessible. Visit www.vineyardtransit.com for current schedules, route maps, fares and additional information.

Tours
There are numerous group and private tour companies available to help you see the beauty of Martha's Vineyard.
