The 79th annual Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass & Bluefish Derby kicked off on September 15th and runs until October 19th, 2024, marking one of the most anticipated events of the year on the island. Whether you’re a seasoned angler or new to fishing, the Derby is a must for anyone looking to experience the thrill of fishing in the island’s bountiful waters. Weigh-ins will take place daily at Dock Street in Edgartown, with mornings from 8:00-10:00 AM and evenings from 7:00-9:00 PM.

As the summer crowds thin out, locals and visitors alike savor the slower pace of September. The Derby offers a chance to not only reel in some impressive catches but also to enjoy the natural beauty of Martha’s Vineyard during the cooler, quieter fall season. Fishing in the Derby is more than just a competition—it’s a celebration of island life, fostering a deep sense of camaraderie and tradition among participants.

Exciting Prizes and Fierce Competition

With incredible prizes on the line, like a new 22-foot Sisu hardtop boat with an outboard motor, trailer and a host of other options, courtesy of Eastern Boats, anglers are motivated to give it their all. The competition is tough, and many participants spend weeks strategizing and perfecting their fishing techniques in hopes of landing the biggest catch.

A Commitment to Conservation

This year, the Derby continues its dedication to conservation with specific rules in place to protect fish populations. Minimum lengths for fish are as follows:

  • Bluefish 22”
  • False Albacore 25”
  • Bonito 21”

Family-Friendly Fun and Island Tradition

Fishing isn’t just for the adults—kids can get involved too! The Derby includes divisions for junior anglers (ages 9-14) and mini juniors (ages 4-8), making it a perfect family activity. Young fishermen and women get the chance to experience the joy of fishing and learn about the importance of conservation and island traditions.

Giving Back to the Island Community

Since 1988, the Derby has been giving back to the island community by awarding scholarships to local Martha’s VIneyard graduating seniors. To date, over $933,000 has been donated, helping generations of islanders pursue higher education. The Derby’s reach goes beyond fishing—it’s about supporting the future of Martha’s Vineyard.

Additionally, the Bass in the Grass Fundraiser, hosted by the Edgartown Board of Trade, will return for its seventh year. Local artists paint beautifully designed bass sculptures, which will be displayed at The Carnegie Heritage Center. These works of art are auctioned off to raise money for the Derby Scholarship Fund, local artists, and the Edgartown Board of Trade, further supporting the island’s next generation of community members.

How to Register

Ready to cast your line? You can register for the Derby at various local tackle shops across the island, including Larry’s Bait & Tackle, Dick’s Bait & Tackle, and Coop’s Bait & Tackle, or online at mvderby.com. Adult registration is $70, seniors $45, and juniors $25. With daily and weekly prizes, plus the ultimate bragging rights, this is an opportunity you don’t want to miss. The Derby committee does strongly encourage anglers to use the online pre-registration system, to help reduce the time in the registration outlets.

Mark your calendar for the highly anticipated awards ceremony on Sunday, October 20, 2024, at Farm Neck Golf Club. Whether you’re hoping to drive away with a new boat or simply enjoy the thrill of the chase, the Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass & Bluefish Derby is a fall event that brings out the best in the island’s fishing community. Tight lines and good luck!
